Fired Uvalde ISD police chief Pete Arredondo wins dispute over less-than-honorable discharge
Uvalde school police Chief Pedro “Pete” Arredondo listens during news conference at Uvalde County Fairplex after 19 students and two teachers were killed in the shooting at Robb Elementary School on May 24, 2022, in Uvalde. Arredondo was later fired. As chief of the Uvalde school district police department, Arredondo should have assumed better command of the May 24, 2022, mass shooting at Robb Elementary School that left 19 students and two teachers dead.
Because the system is confidential, it is unclear what discharge designation Uvalde school officials gave Arredondo after they fired him; the fact that he appealed it only indicates it was less-than-honorable. So it is also unknown if his administrative victory elevated his discharge status from dishonorable to general, or from general to honorable., a nonprofit and nonpartisan think tank that uses data analysis to advocate for state government reforms.
The revelation is the second recent example of a Texas police officer publicly accused of outrageous conduct sidestepping meaningful sanctions.was able to keep working as a licensed Texas peace officer after being fired for giving a homeless man a sandwich with feces in it and then later smearing a “a brown substance with the consistency of tapioca” on a women’s toilet seat.
Because Texas has about 2,800 policing agencies — more than New York, California, Florida and Illinois combined — those protocols can vary widely. The state licensing agency on its own can only revoke an officer’s license if he is convicted of certain crimes or accumulates two dishonorable discharges.
The public, meanwhile, was left with a system that thwarted uniform police accountability. In 2020, a report by the Sunset Advisory Commission, which evaluates state agencies every decade, concluded Texas’s regulation of its law enforcement officers was toothless. A 2021 bill that would have started fixing the system was punted to 2023.Sunset committee’s latest evaluation of TCOLE again concluded
