Review: 'First Contact: An Alien Encounter,' Nic Stacey’s entertaining documentary on PBS, imagines what might happen if humanity received a definite signal of intelligent life beyond Earth

Some of what Mr. Stacey imagines is blackly funny—the social-media response alone might suggest why humanity has never hosted any intergalactic visitors. The reactions range from awe and wonder to collective trauma, the assumption being among many—per the sci-fi tradition—that aliens would be hostile.
