San Antonio’s Aggie Park about to open renovated event center for Texas A&M alumni
Inside Aggie Park is a collection of all of the Texas A&M yearbooks. Even though it is now called Aggieland, until 1948, the yearbook was called Longhorn.
The 3.3-acre park already had a 6,000-square-foot event center with a ballroom and kitchen, but it was outdated and too small to work as a rental for many modern events. The renovation expanded and modernized the building, adding 2,000 square feet and updating the finishings. The Aggie alumni club was founded in 1921 and Aggie Park dates from 1946 when 10 A&M grads, include H.B. Zachry, later founder of the eponymous construction company, chipped in $100 each to buy 3.3 acres of land from an area dairy farmer.Over the years, club members developed the land, eventually constructing a building they used for barbecues, dances, poker games, beer drinking and the like.
The building, which was expanded several times through the years, hosts events such as Aggie muster, when attendees remember area classmates who’ve died during the previous year, Aggie Family Barbecue, attended by as many as 350, and Coach’s Night when the A&M football coach talks about the upcoming season.
