Opinion | I was the first American to receive the COVID-19 vaccine. The biggest lesson I learned from the pandemic has nothing to do with my newfound celebrity. By sandralindsayRN of NorthwellHealth.
Become an InsiderI was the first American to receive a COVID-19 vaccine, but the biggest lesson I got from the pandemic came before that.
Well, for a moment, at least. As a nurse at Northwell Health, New York's largest healthcare system that has treated more than 200,000 COVID-19 patients, I was theto receive the long-awaited vaccine. It was a deeply hopeful day, for me as well as for all of us, a ray of light after many dark months of working around the clock to care for so many sick and dying patients.
And so, trying to find ways to adjust to our new and stressful reality, my team members and I started doing what felt safe and good and right — which, in our case, was just taking a walk. Slowly, however, something strange started happening. Ambling in the park, I noticed I was much more likely to share stories about my own personal life than I was when my colleagues and I were seated around a conference table. The same was true for others as well: Before too long, I realized I'd learned more about my colleagues' families, ideas, and experiences in a few short months than I had in years of working side by side.
