Thank you for (not) flying. Greta Thunberg’s global anti-flying crusade lands in the U.S.

By Sofia McFarland Updated Aug. 30, 2019 9:54 am ET A year ago, a 15-year-old in leopard-print tights sat down outside the Swedish Parliament building with a purple backpack and a sign announcing she was on strike over climate change.

There was a hashtag for this, too: #tagskryt, or train bragging, which was also quickly adopted by non-Swedes. Rail travel is a viable option in most of Europe, but less so in much of America. And U.S. demand for air travel is climbing, not decreasing. Ed Bastian, chief executive of Delta Air Lines Inc., told The Wall Street Journal in July that he doesn’t expect environmental concerns to knock that off course.

“We believe that people should take individual action if they can. Some people need to fly for their jobs or for their families and we will not be shaming them,” said Ms. Hogue, “Corporations need to take responsibility and provide alternatives to travel,” she said. Ms. Wolrath-Söderberg said her ongoing research shows the importance of role models for people who decide to stop flying. “Many told us they took that step after a specific person inspired them or dug deeper into the painful divide between the person one wants to be and how one actually lives. Often that person was a child, a grandchild—or Greta.”
