Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis on Tuesday further restricted gatherings in the state even as he criticized New York and California for imposing sweeping lockdowns that he said were being widely ignored

TALLAHASSEE — .

“It's a very serious situation. They’ve suffered terribly through no fault of their own. But what we’re seeing now is that, understandably, people want to get out of New York,” said Anthony Fauci, director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases. “They’re going to Florida. They’re going to Long Island.”

Direct flights from New York to Florida have increased since Friday, when New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo issued an order directing non-essential employees to work from home, DeSantis said. Data showed 127 flights scheduled Tuesday, 43 of which were canceled by evening. Ninety flights were scheduled for Wednesday, but 39 of them had been canceled, according to FlightAware data.
