Maceo Carter said the damage his wheelchair received on an American Airlines flight prevented him from working for two weeks.
Molly Burke is legally blind and has had many hard times traveling through an airport.in May to speak to members of Congress about improving accessibility. He said it was a great trip that ended on a sour note when he landed in Phoenix and found his power wheelchair was no longer working.
“They push us aside to try to get everybody else on. Mind you, this is myself, my wife and a two-year-old,” he said. “That was an additional two and a half hours we spent while they tried to work on the chair in the middle of the terminal.
“Two weeks of work in this economy for someone who is differently abled could cost them their job,” she said. “Two weeks of work is food out of my children’s mouth.” According to American, Carter received a $300 credit toward a future trip, but he said he found that compensation “beyond insulting.” In the end, what Carter said he wants is for airlines to understand how important mobility aids are for travelers who are differently abled.
