Entering Thursday’s game in Reno, the former Agoura High standout was hitting .295 with a .338 on-base percentage and a .525 slugging percentage through his first 14 games at Triple-A Oklahoma City…

Ever since he graduated from Agoura High School, the story of Jonny DeLuca’s baseball career is that he hasn’t stayed in one place for very long.

Then on Sunday, the Dodgers’ incumbent backup right-handed hitting outfielder, Trayce Thompson, broke out of his 0-for-39 slump with a 3-for-3 game against the Tampa Bay Rays. DeLuca’s major league debut became a bit less imminent – but no less inevitable. Even before he graduated from high school, DeLuca had developed a rare combination of baseball instincts and athleticism that lends itself to a quick ascent. He helped Agoura win Marmonte League championships as a freshman, sophomore and a junior. As a senior, he batted .374 with five home runs and 19 stolen bases.

Between college, the pros, and two seasons of summer ball, DeLuca has an 85% success rate on stolen base attempts. After hitting 11 home runs in 111 college games at Oregon, DeLuca hit 22 homers in 101 games in 2021 between the low-A and advanced-A levels.
