Don Wolfe of Moreno Valley asked what the rules are for motorcycles that engage in “lane sharing” and “lane splitting,” both of which are legal in California.
“In the years before this happened, the rule, even though not legal, was if traffic was going less than 40 mph motorcycles could do this,” Wolfe said. “Now it seems that no matter what speed the traffic is flowing at, they do it. I have had them come between me and the car to my left at well above the speed limit.”Lane sharing is when two vehicles traveling in the same direction at the same time are in the same lane. This can be two motorcycles or a motorcycle and a car.
The California Highway Patrol wrote educational safety guidelines for lane-splitting after the passage of Assembly Bill 51, which became law on Jan. 1, 2017, and formally defined legal lane-splitting in California.
