Born Ermias Asghedom to an Eritrean-immigrant father and an American mother, Nipsey grew up in the Crenshaw section of Los Angeles, where his parents got what he described as the"worst house on the best block." He showed an early aptitude for business, albeit particularly the illicit sort, and fell in with a local gang.
But Nipsey's focus eventually turned to music—and creative ways he could monetize it when his career as an independent artist started to gain momentum. In 2013, he decided to press justfor $100 apiece. Jay-Z bought 100, and Nipsey plowed the profits into his own record label, All Money In.
