We chat with BigGeorgeForeman star Forest Whitaker about portraying legendary boxing trainer Doc Broadus in the new biopic, and an imminent return to StarWars:
Perhaps the most surprising thing about Sony’s upcoming film Big George Foreman is that George Foreman’s life hasn’t been brought to the big screen until now. A boxer, preacher, and community builder, Foreman has lived an exceptional life, made even more inspirational given the man’s beginnings.
Forest Whitaker: You have a character, a person, that you're responsible for. So you start to learn the real-life gestures, behaviors, movements, food choices, or clothing choices; all these different things that that person would do. In this case, I had to look at documentaries about him. There's some really good ones, [and] good stuff on the net about him as well.
At least the way the movie tells it, George Foreman's mom was really not a fan of his boxing, at least in the beginning. As you were like researching this, did you learn anything helpful about how Doc Broadus' relationship and Nancy Foreman's relationship [may have affected] George Foreman's life?
