No. 1 seeds Niah Watson of Kearny High School and Ashton Prieto of University City HS win individual crowns
Form held at the CIF coed badminton championships Saturday as No. 1 seeds Niah Watson of Kearny and Ashton Prieto of University City won the individual championships.
After finishing second last year, Watson won the girls title, defeating Gabriela Naranjo of San Diego 21-11 and 21-14. Prieto defeated Jaden Seangmany of Scripps Ranch 21-18, 21-18 in the boys final.The championships were held at the Balboa Park Activity Center, close to the San Diego High campus. “I just focused on my game,” said Watson, a senior bound for UC San Diego. “Because San Diego, they have a big crowd for cheering and I get mad hearing it. For the final, I just tuned it out and focused on Gabby.”
Watson and Prieto, a senior, added doubles titles to their singles haul. Watson and Sydney Phu defeated Naranjo and Nico Maruyama 21-17, 21-12 for the girls doubles final. Prieto and Duyen Pham defeated Allan Fang and Mary Liu of Westview in the mixed doubles final 21-5, 21-13. Vansh Vinod and Seangmany downed Bao Le and Nicolas Vo of Patrick Henry 21-9, 21-17 in the boys doubles championship.
