The former All-American for the North Carolina Tar Heels made the announcement Saturday.
Montross, 51, has been a commentator for the Tar Heel Sports Network since 1995.
He was a star at North Carolina and helped the Tar Heels win the 1993 NCAA title. He was a two-time All-American. The 7-foot center was the Boston Celtics’ first-round pick, ninth-overall, in 1994. He played for the Celtics through the 1996 season and had stints with the Dallas Mavericks, New Jersey Nets, Philadelphia 76ers, Detroit Pistons and Toronto Raptors before wrapping up his career after the 2002 season.
