Former Ohio governor John Kasich used a drawing of a triangle with three words — party, public, conscience — to demonstrate what he believes vulnerable senators facing tight reelection bids are having to consider as they prepare for an impeachment trial
Republicans push back against Democratic Senate leader's proposal for impeachment trial witnessesagainst Senator Chuck Schumer's proposal
for four witnesses is starting to take shape, with senior GOP aides making the case that it's not the job of the Senate to do the fact-finding that the House was supposed to do. The argument is expected to go like this: If House Democrats really wanted to speak with Mick Mulvaney, John Bolton and others, then they should have gone to court to secure their testimony.
On Twitter this morning, Sen. John Cornyn made a similar argument, saying that Schumer"should have talked" to Adam Schiff, Jerry Nadler and Nancy Pelosi about his request for witnesses. "They dropped their demands for this testimony when it became apparent that witnesses were going to seek court guidance on competing demands. Schiff dropped the ball," he said.Ultimately, it will be up to a majority of senators to decide which witnesses they want to hear from. So four GOP senators could break ranks and demand testimony from any number of witnesses during the proceedings.
