After a winding college career that included a transfer from Texas, former Fort Bend Elkins star Donovan Williams made his NBA debut earlier this month.

It would have been easy for Williams to recede into the abyss, like many high school prodigies before him. Instead, he rose above it. Still, Williams was a fringe prospect. Gifted and dedicated, certainly. But still on the raw side, and with a short track record of collegiate success. “As a mom, I was nervous,” she said. “I teetered between, here he was with two years left and I felt like in that timeframe he could graduate. And that was a huge thing for me. But then he started getting all this attention.”
“I told my parents, I told my agents, I told the people in my camp that, you know, regardless of how it goes, draft night, afterwards, I feel like I’ll be alright,” Williams said.
