A former nurse has said the Apple Watch may have saved her life, in an interview with TV station KSDK News.
She says she was hardly aware the Apple Watch actually recorded heart rate, as she used it as a basic fitness tracker, mostly just clearing Apple’s Activity rings.
This also means the Apple Watch’s usefulness here relied on its most basic form of heart rate monitoring, the optical heart rate sensor. A lot of the recent “life-saving” stories about the Apple Watch have hinged on its ECG monitor, which can detect an abnormal sinus rhythm. However, using it is an active process — you start an ECG session and place a finger on the watch’s crown.
The optical monitor can not analyze sinus rhythm, but it can recognise bradycardia, an abnormally slow heart beat. The symptoms of this are things like light-headedness, fainting and fatigue. Identifying it with a wearable is not rocket science, but shows how the data provided by a wearable can dissuade you from thinking such symptoms are just a result of a bad night’s sleep, or simply in your head.
