A Fort Worth police officer shot and killed a man who allegedly pointed a handgun at officers during a standoff late Saturday, authorities said.

Police were called about 11 p.m. to a home in the 4000 block of Wiman Drive, off Miller Avenue in the city’s Eastland neighborhood. A woman who called 911 told dispatchers her son was damaging her house with a hammer.

The dispatcher could hear the son telling his mother he would hurt her if any officers responded to the home, according to police. Responding officers saw the man, who police have not identified, holding a handgun while answering the door, police said. A SWAT team arrived and began negotiations. At one point, the suspect’s mother left the home. Police saw the armed man in the door “pointing his handgun at an officer,” police said.

“The officer responded to the deadly threat by firing his weapon, striking the suspect,” police said. “The suspect was pronounced deceased on scene.” Fort Worth police said the investigation was in its preliminary stages. Police did not identify the officer who fired their weapon, or say how many shots were fired.. Michael D. Williams is a reporter covering breaking news for The Dallas Morning News.
