'Fortnite' servers are currently down as the game prepares for the chapter 2/Season 11 update. We don't know how long it will last, but right now we're just staring at a black hole.

Things are a little different this time around. Usually, we get a live event with a week or two left in the season, then we mop up loose ends for a moment before getting ready for the big reveal of the new season. This one isn't exactly what you'd call usual, however: this is the launch of Chapter 2, which Epic is positioning as a much bigger shift than a simple Season 11. And that means it's dropping the season in a very different way than previous seasons.

I tried exiting and coming back in to see what would happen, and my game hung at the login screen before asking me for my username and password. Later attempts took me to the black hole screen, which is now evolving. So I think it's fair to call the game down right now, though it's clearly intentional.

The length of the downtime is currently unknown, though the downtime that begins a season usually lasts something around 2 hours. But this is a different beast entirely: it's not a technical outage or an accidental outage. It's what we could only call a narrative outage, something I don't think I've ever seen in a game before.

When the game comes up we should be getting a host of massive changes, likely including a new map and new UI in addition to the usual start of season changes. That might mean a longer downtime than with previous seasons, though it's a bit of a question mark at this point. The best thing to do is to keep an eye on the new official Fortnite Status twitter account, or just to stare down the Epic Games launcher to see what's going to happen.

There's mystery in the game right now, which is what we like to have. What happens next: I have no idea.I'm a freelance writer whose work has appeared in The Atlantic, The New York Times, The New Republic, IGN.com, Wired and more. I cover social games, video games, technol...
