Review: Enigmatic R&B artist Frank Ocean’s performance was thrilling musically, but if you aren’t a superfan, it looked like a train wreck.

Musically, the set was thrilling. The hourlong delay was punishing for the crowd, many who had staked out their places hours before in anticipation. But the mood never turned to anger — we were all on Ocean’s side. People began to file out halfway through the set, but I was surprised how many people I spoke to afterward who actually loved it. On the walk back to my car, I polled three strangers and got the following reviews:“Six months from now, people will say that was the dopest show ever.

My personal tinfoil theory is that this was the first take of a concert film, in the vein of Beyonce’s “Homecoming.” That idea stems from the throughline between his 2017 performances and the Coachella set. It’s worth considering one of Ocean’s last public appearances. In 2017 at Los Angeles’ FYF Fest, he performed in the round with a group of musicians and had Spike Jonze casually traverse the stage with a handheld camera, the grainy VHS-quality footage displayed on the screen behind him. It felt like we were welcomed into Ocean’s rehearsal space, sitting right beside him as he kneeled on the ground to play a soul-crushing Wurlitzer version of “Good Guy.

In some ways, the Coachella set brought to mind that night in 2017. But his time at Coachella felt like its doomed sequel: a bloated Hollywood production gone off the rails due to mismanagement or unrealistic ambition or just because it doesn’t take a genius to know it’s a bad idea to put an ice rink in the desert. But regardless of the off-the-rails nature of the performance, it was still Frank, and for the obsessive fans in the audience like myself, that was enough.

Perhaps next week we’ll find out this was all part of a broader plan, but as for now, the only person who knows for sure was the man who took the stage Sunday.

Why we need to think about the oceans differentlyWhy we need to think about the oceans differentlyTwo-thirds of the planet is covered by water, and much of that space is ungoverned.
