Freddy Krueger actor Robert Englund recalls the grueling music video shoot Dokken had to endure for A Nightmare on Elm Street 3: Dream Warriors. The third Nightmare on Elm Street movie was released in 1987 and is often considered the fan favorite of the franchise. The film is notable today for the introduction of a young Patricia Arquette and for also bringing back Heather Langenkamp, who played Nancy Thompson in the first Nightmare on Elm Street.
Aside from the cast, clever kills, and intriguing storyline, Dream Warriors is also fondly remembered for its catchy theme song by Dokken. The music video showed the band in Freddy's boiler room dungeon, splicing together clips of Arquette with the musicians. While Arquette didn't return to film new scenes, Englund did, with the music video showing Freddy waking up from his nightmare where the band defeats him.
Englund: When I think back Don, to that day, we were deep deep deep San Fernando Valley. Santa Clarita, on a converted industrial building then made into a sound stage, and I got to go in and out. I got to go in and out and they thought of new things to do with me and I go back to the green room and have a beer you know. Those guys were on that cold concrete for 12 hours and I remember, Don just said it again back stage here, but I remember you guys got leg cramps.
Dokken: Yeah we’re getting cramps. I go, ‘can I have a chair?’ Yeah I’m young, I go 'I need to just sit down for a minute’ because we’re all wearing like cowboy boots.Dokken: Freezing our, and it was cold! And remember they had no food for us. I mean they’re like we’re out in the middle of nowhere and they brought some pizzas, they’re stone cold.
By Part 3 of the Nightmare on Elm Street series, Freddy Krueger was a huge part of pop culture. Dokken was also starting to grow in popularity, opening for bands like Aerosmith and AC/DC. Had one of these bigger bands been hired to do the Dream Warriors music video, it's very possible the working conditions would have been better.
