France's sale of spectrum for 5G networks will cost the likes of Orange over 2 bln euros. But the telcos get a decent slice of bandwidth and will pay less than elsewhere. In a sector bruised by price wars, greed would have backfired, says edwardcropley:
France’s telecommunications regulator Arcep on Nov. 21 kicked off the auction of spectrum for superfast 5G services. The process is likely to conclude around March 2020.
Junior Economy Minister Agnes Pannier-Runacher told Les Echos newspaper on Nov. 24 that the government would set a reserve price for the sale via auction of spectrum in the 3.4 GHz-3.8 GHz band at 2.17 billion euros, more than the 1.5 billion euros requested by the regulator. The auction pits the four main operators – Orange, Altice Europe, Bouygues and Iliad – against each other. Four blocks of 50 MHz will be sold for 350 million euros each, followed by an auction of 11 blocks of 10 MHz, with a starting price of 70 million euros each.
