Hagerty is not so much the film’s comic relief as she is just sheer relief from Charlie and Nicole’s increasingly combative divorce proceedings. Sandra, meanwhile, still likes Charlie and urges her daughter to whisk Charlie off for a Palm Springs weekend to help get over this “speed bump” in their marriage. “It was all on the page,” she said, when asked if she had developed a backstory for her character. “Noah dots his i’s and crosses his t’s.
Hagerty has an affinity for comedy without being “funny.” “I’ve said this,” she explained. “I do like to laugh, but I never think when I’m working that something is funny. It’s from your heart and that character’s soul. It’s the writing or the situation and if [the audience] chooses to laugh, hooray. But in the moment, I never go, ‘Here comes the funny bit.’ It has to be the same as if you were doing great drama.
