Some of the changes in menswear relate to new conceptions of masculinity; others to the reconfiguration of the workplace; and still more to the internet, which offers information and selection to a never-more-engaged audience.
The book does begin with Beau Brummell, who is pretty much agreed upon as being the guy who kicked off modern men’s fashion in a lot of ways. It’s interesting that much of what he cared about—being fastidious and a little bit flashy—those things are carried through until today. I think [shows are] important; it’s just that we’re in the moment, so we’re looking at collection by collection, and it’s easy to say we’re overloaded, but it’s up to that next generation to 10 years from now, 20 years from now, 30 years from now, 50 years from now, to look back and say, like, “That’s what really matters from that.” I suppose it takes some time to reflect on things that really mattered.
