Because of the pandemic, the Spurs’ games are being broadcast remotely. Because of the...

Spurs Announcer Bill Land works on from inside the mobile broadcast set-up at the AT&T Center. The Spurs played an away game against Oklahoma City Thunder and while the San Antonio Rodeo occupied the broadcast team’s regular spots in the AT&T Center, the team produced the game from outside in TV trucks amid rodeo-goers.Like every play-by-play announcer in the NBA, Bill Land carries a credential granting him access to his team’s home arena.

Their goal? As always, it’s to make thousands of Bally Sports viewers feel like they’re watching the Spurs in person. As for the fact that the crew is trying to do this in the middle of a rootin’, tootin’ rodeo full of oblivious buckaroos, while the Spurs are playing in Oklahoma City, almost 500 miles away?“We welcome you back into ‘Spurs Live’ studios.

“I couldn’t believe we were going to do a broadcast from there,” Elliott says of his first glimpse at the pod. “But I never put anything past the resiliency of the guys in the truck.” The way it works now, they have to use what the Thunder’s broadcast crew sends them. Kickirillo has seven camera shots available at all times, but he can talk live to only two operators, who he has not met in person. That creates some challenges.

Asked for his job description, Doyle says he’s “a utility guy — behind the scenes.” Back in the late ‘90s, a friend asked if he wanted to “pull cables” for a Time Warner broadcast crew at a football game. Doyle loved it, and has been doing it as a subcontractor ever since. See, no matter where a broadcast originates, there always are going to be complications. But the rodeo setup just presents the possibility of dealing with more of them.

Elliott says that happens now more often than he’d like. He does not miss being on the road 50 or 60 nights per year and being away from his family. In the old days, Ashcraft and Kickirillo would have finished their evening by heading back to the Spurs’ team hotel, or boarding the chartered plane. Due to the pandemic, they don’t have that access anymore. That means they’re just a bit further removed from what they’re covering, and they realize that probably affects the product.
