'Skid Row Marathon' will be showing nationwide on October 14 at 7 p.m., one night only.

Many members of the group call Skid Row—a roughly 50-block area in Los Angeles that houses up to 11,000 of the city’s homeless population—home, and many of them suffer from alcohol or drug addictions. The film, however, tells the story of how running brought some light and hope to this section of L.A.

“It was just hard,” Gabi added. “Once you put so much time and effort into one runner, then the next day they’re gone. You hoped you had a good story, but then it fell apart.” “As documentarians, you have to have their willingness and openness to work with you,” Gabi said. “Everyone has a wall in front of themselves, but letting it all out and going to film them early in the morning—it takes a bond.”

Cabrera spent 29 years of his life in prison for committing murder. There’s a scene in the film where Cabrera drives the cameraman right up to the spot where he shot the victim, and painfully recounts the night that changed the trajectory of his life. Over the course of three years, the Hayeses and their team witnessed similar victories, including trips to Ghana and Rome with the group for two marathons. Gabi even put herself in the action.
