Ayala: ‘Call Ramón’ — chronicler of Tejano music has known everyone who was anyone, from Selena to Freddy Fender
Music journalist, photographer and musicologist Ramón Roberto Hernández amassed a vast archive of Latin music memorabilia, including backstage photos, concert posters, albums, 45-rpm records and stage costumes. The Wittliff Collection at Texas State University acquired much of the collection in 2018.It was 1987.
Hernández kept the FedEx slip that came with that 45 record. Today, it’s in his vast archive of albums, posters, stage outfits and other Latin music memorabilia, a chunk of which was acquired by theThe connections he made over his years as a chronicler of the Tejano music scene stagger the imagination — and invite disbelief.
That collection grew to include notes and programs, press kits and posters, musical instruments and costumes. It expanded from entertainment into the arts, sports, politics and comedy. He speaks five languages and says his Italian is better than his English. He has been married four times, first to an Italian, the mother of his two adult children. He remarried his second wife, Martha Reyes, who’s now his fourth. They fostered 13 children during their 39 years together.His most recent book, “He’s 81. He’s part Otomi and part Chichimeca, sub-tribes of the Aztecs, he says.
