Minutes into the operation, hydrogen fuel began seeping from the engine section at the bottom of the rocket, violating safety rules.

CAPE CANAVERAL, Fla. — NASA’s new moon rocket sprang another dangerous fuel leak Saturday, forcing launch controllers to call off their second attempt to send a crew capsule into lunar orbit with test dummies.

Launch director Charlie Blackwell-Thompson and her team tried to plug Saturday’s leak the way they did the last time: stopping and restarting the flow of super-cold liquid hydrogen in hopes of removing the gap around a seal in the supply line. They tried that twice, in fact, and also flushed helium through the line. But the leak persisted.“We have a scrub for the day,” announced NASA’s launch commentator, Derrol Nail.

Fuel Leak Disrupts NASA's 2nd Shot at Launching Moon RocketFuel Leak Disrupts NASA's 2nd Shot at Launching Moon RocketNASA’s new moon rocket has sprung another fuel leak. The problem cropped up at daybreak Saturday as the Florida launch team began loading nearly 1 million gallons of fuel into the 322-foot rocket. Within minutes, a hydrogen fuel leak was detected around the engine section at the bottom of the rocket. Engineers are scrambling to plug the leak as the countdown continues toward an afternoon liftoff. NASA is trying to send an empty crew capsule around the moon, pushing it to the limit before astronauts climb aboard. If this five-week demo goes well, astronauts could fly around the moon in 2024 and land on it in 2025. Astronauts last walked on the moon 50 years ago.
