Will and Lucy Lowe started Cambridge Gin from their living room, and Vicky hangs out with them for the day to find out exactly what it takes to create such creative flavours.Head down the booze aisles of any supermarket and you’ll be inundated with a huge selection of gins – from big name brands to craft distillers, and every flavour under the sun.
Inspired by his desire to create a top-quality spirit, and Lucy’s desire to venture onto a new career path, the pair embarked on an adventure which would soon see them making some of the rarest and most exclusive gins in the world., from classic flavours such as their standard Cambridge Dry Gin, to limited-editions produced each month as part of a Prototype Series .
But one of the gins I was most excited to try doesn’t use local ingredients, but some from Copenhagen. Anty Gin, a joint venture between The Cambridge Distillery and Nordic Food Lab is made with juniper, nettle, Alexander seeds and approximately 62 wood ants per bottle. And each bottle comes with a small spray bottle of 100% pure ant distillate, which allows the taster to familiarise themselves with the taste of ant. Yes, really.At £200 a bottle, Anty gin isn’t their most expensive, The Cambridge Distillery also produces a £2000 bottle of gin, Watenshi, regarded as one of the most exclusive gins in the world.
