on Thursday unveiled a new plan vowing to revamp affordable housing in the state if he’s elected — including doubling production of it.That’s one of several ideas the Democrat laid out regarding the often-controversial topic of expanding affordable housing in the nation’s densely most populated state, where the cost of living is notoriously high.
“When you talk about affordability in New Jersey, most campaigns talk about taxes,” Fulop said during a news conference on the plan at a mixed-use development in South Orange. “And the reality is that the conversation around affordability is much more complicated than that. And housing is a key part of that.”
Meanwhile, according to Fulop, you need an annual household income of $69,675 to afford a two-bed rental at HUD’s fair market rent — almost double the current minimum wage of $15 an hour. He said a proposal on boosting it would be the “first major piece of legislation we will tackle” if he wins, within the first 100 days of taking office.
