The"grand" reopening, scheduled for March 31-April 1, also is part of the yearlong celebration marking the state parks' centennial, according to the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department. The Galveston Island State Park Beach Redevelopment project was spurred by the damage caused by Hurricane Ike, which struck the Texas coast in 2008. The storm"devastated" the upper Texas coast and wiped out much of the park's infrastructure, according to the department.
Improvements to the park include new headquarters, 95 campsites and day-use areas that are elevated and feature structures that are designed to be"more resistant to future extreme weather,” according to a release from the parks department. The project also put in new roads. The 2,000-acre park now offers a remodeled nature center, shade shelters in the day-use areas, group-use pavilions on the beach section, an equestrian area, two boardwalks, two observation towers, 5 miles of hiking trails and three kayaking launch sites with over 11 miles of paddling trails, the release said.
