South Meridian Street in the Old Southside will soon have protected pedestrian and bike paths through a $7 million project.
. Neighborhoods apply to be part of the initiative, and the city has chosen one or two neighborhoods a year to funnel federal dollars into improvements, such as affordable housing, placemaking and infrastructure.
The Old Southside, bordered roughly by South Street, Madison Avenue, the White River and the CSX train tracks to the south, was chosen as a Lift Indy neighborhood in 2018. Since then, there have been improvements to Kelly Park, a dozen affordable homes built, and ground broken on a $58 million apartment complex with 5% of units reserved for low-income households.
But the most complaints City-County Councilor Kristin Jones said she receives in her district are about infrastructure. Cyclists are forced to share the road, a four-lane road with no shoulders. Pedestrians have no protections. And when it rains hard enough, stormwater floods above the curb line in some parts ― new stormwater drainage structures underground constitute a signifcant portion of the $6.8 million, Department of Metropolitan Development director Scarlett Andrews said.
"Keep your eye on the Old Southside and Stadium Village," said Erica Wells, president of the Stadium Village Business Association."In just a couple of years, you won't recognize us."
