Republicans say they're 'protecting' women's athletics from transgender kids.

The U.S. House speaker stood before a gaggle of reporters Thursday and trumpeted the House’s passage of a bill banning transgender athletes from competing in women’s sports.
It’s the same point repeatedly made in Texas — where Republicans essentially banned transgender kids from competing in K-12 sports two years ago and could extend that ban to college athletics this year — and a host of other red states. Democrats pushed Title IX through Congress, and while a Republican president, Richard Nixon, signed it into law, there’s plenty of evidence to suggest that he hadn’t considered the way Title IX would impact sports, and quickly wanted to roll back its protections.
Reagan’s Justice Department argued for a narrow interpretation of Title IX, contending that the law’s provisions should be applied only to college financial-aid programs, since that’s where federal aid generally goes.When Congressional Democrats restored Title IX’s protections for women’s sports in 1988, Reagan vetoed the bill. All 24 U.S. Senate votes siding with Reagan’s veto came from Republicans.
Forget the fact that self-identified trans individuals make up only 0.6 percent of our population and less than half of them are transgender women and girls. Forget the fact that the number of transgender individuals attempting to participate in women’s sports is miniscule.
