The price of gas in Southern California has climbed rapidly over the last few weeks as oil refineries across the state experience maintenance problems.

The average pump price for regular gas in the Los Angeles-Long Beach area stood at $3.946 on Wednesday, up about 22 cents from a week ago and 70 cents, or 17%, from a month ago, according to

The average price for regular gas across the state was at $3.874 on Wednesday, up about 10% from $3.526 the same time last year, the AAA said. California produces the majority of its own gasoline because it uses special blends to reduce smog that other states don’t use, so when refineries have problems, the state has trouble replacing lost production, said Marie Montgomery, a spokeswoman for the Auto Club of Southern California.
