Villa Rica, Ga., Police Chief Michael Mansour said there was no ill-intent in using the life-size photo of a Black man, who is pointing a gun and wearing a beanie, but said it was “bad judgment” to post the images on social media.
And it hasn’t stopped the mayor of Villa Rica from launching an investigation into what happened. Theis asking for a meeting with city leaders, calling the target “extremely offensive.”
“These types of targets have been used by other police departments in the U.S. and have been deemed racially inappropriate and unacceptable,” the chapter says in a letter to the police chief posted on Facebook. “The ‘apology’ statement from your department via Facebook displays a lack of sincerity, sensitivity toward minority residents, and makes it abundantly clear that your department lacks the Diversity, Equity and Inclusion training that all local officials should strive to participate in.
A representative with the police department says the photo of the Black man will no longer be used for civilian training but still will be used by officers,“It’s just an innocent mistake, but it was a mistake,” Mansour tells NBC News. “And I’m very transparent in saying that we messed up. But at no time will I accept people telling me I’m a racist, or our department is a racist because we made a mistake.
