The Georgia state Senate has moved forward a bill that would separate the neighborhood of Buckhead from the city of Atlanta.
The two bills, which would create a separate city named Buckhead City, were approved by the state Senate's State and Local Government Operations Committee Monday. It passed the committee by a 4-3 margin and will proceed to the full chamber.The neighborhood is seeking to separate from Atlanta over concerns regarding the city's crime and use of municipal funds.
Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene tweeted in support of the proposal, saying the decision should be an"easy one for a Republican controlled legislature." Democrats opposed to the plan have concerns about what the separation would do to the remaining city, including debt obligations. They also have expressed concerns about the precedent it would set.“What is happening today is my constituents are being forced to eat a half-baked pie,” state Sen. Jason Esteves said before the committee vote.
The bill will now go to the Rules Committee to be placed on the schedule for a full vote in the state Senate.
