German Chancellor Merkel has made her first visit to the former Nazi Germany death camp of Auschwitz. Merkel brought a new government donation of 60 million euros to help conserve the physical remnants of the site, the most notorious of Hitler's regime.
German Chancellor Angela Merkel and Polish Prime Minister Mateusz Morawiecki, from left, visit the former Nazi death camp of Auschwitz-Birkenau in Oswiecim, Poland on Friday, Friday, Dec. 6, 2019. Merkel attend an event in occasion of the 10th anniversary of the founding of the Auschwitz Foundation.
Together, those objects endure as evidence of German atrocities and as one of the world’s most recognizable symbols of humanity’s capacity for evil. But they also are deteriorating under the strain of time and mass tourism, prompting a long-term conservation effort. They also visited a laboratory where the conservation is done before a ceremony where Merkel met former inmates and was to deliver a speech.
