Two little-known MPs looked like agents of change for German politics, but they will have their work cut out

Neither Mr Walter-Borjans, an undistinguished former finance minister in the state of North Rhine-Westphalia, nor Ms Esken, a little-knownspecialising in digital policy, looked like charismatic agents of change.
Optimists argue that by setting the course for an ambitious election programme in 2021, Mr Walter-Borjans and Ms Esken could rejuvenate a despondent party without blowing up the government. Yet idealistic visions are hard to pursue alongside the compromises of coalition—Mr Scholz remains committed to the black zero, for example—and the new duo does not look ready for prime-time.
