Gervonta Davis scores another early KO win, but when will he face another champion?
Perhaps Dock could have allowed the fight last one more punch, but it wasn't a horrible stoppage. However, it was Nunez's carelessness after the clinch that got him into trouble.
For all intent and purpose, this was a showcase bout for Davis. He is a Baltimore native and he was set up for success in his home state. Nunez was Davis' mandatory challenger, so he shouldn't be criticized for taking this fight. That said, most would have preferred to see him face Tevin Farmer, Jamal Herring or Miguel Berchelt. Unfortunately, there are the omnipresent promotional and cable network impediments blocking those fights.
Davis called Farmer out after the win, which is a good sign. Davis was specific. He said he wanted the fight before the end of the year. It sounds great, but it is still just words at this point. The more Davis wins and the larger crowds he draws, the bigger the target on his back. Perhaps as a glimmer of hope, we saw Maurice Hooker and Jose Ramirez cross those promotional and cable network lines on Saturday night to engage in a compelling unification bout. Farmer defeated Guillaume Frenois on the same card. Despite the obvious appeal of the Hooker-Ramirez card, there is no question the vast majority of boxing fans were tuned into Davis' latest victory over an overmatched opponent.In any case, Davis' star power is real.
Nunez made a good account of himself. He looked confident and like a challenger looking to give himself a realistic chance to win. However, he just didn't have the talent to handle Davis.
