A massive, tangled blob of seaweed called the Great Atlantic Sargassum Belt is drifting toward the Texas coast.
In the ocean, sargassum acts as a “floating island,” providing shade, food and protection to fish, sea turtles and hundreds of species of marine life, according to theOnce it reaches the shore, however, it begins to rot and produces ammonia and hydrogen sulfide, giving off a stench of rotten eggs. It may also contain high concentrations of heavy metals like arsenic, the agency warns.
Sargassum also poses some benefits, Armitage said. By trapping windblown sand, the seaweed can help fortify and grow sand dunes.
