Big Blue made the moves just ahead of Tuesday's 4 p.m. deadline for NFL teams to use their franchise and transition tags.
Jones, who is entering his fifth season after being drafted sixth overall in 2019, will reportedly receive $82 million guaranteed. He is coming off a career year in which he threw for 3,205 yards, with 15 touchdowns and five interceptions. He also rushed for 708 yards and seven TDs. Barkley rushed for 1,310 yards in his first full season since his rookie year of 2018. The former No. 2 overall pick scored 10 touchdowns and finished with 1,650 all-purpose yards. He will earn $10.091 million in 2023 under the non-exclusive franchise tender.
General manager Joe Schoen said the organization planned to use its franchise tag on Jones if the sides were unable to reach a deal, which likely would have resulted in Barkley becoming a free agent. Instead, both are now in the fold as the Giants will look to build off a very successful 2022 season in which they went 9-7-1 and qualified for the playoffs for the first time since 2016.
