Columbus Mayor Andrew J. Ginther has proposed $1.1 billion in new spending in the 2023 capital budget
Mayor Andrew J. Ginther has sent Columbus City Council his proposed annual capital budget for 2023 totaling $1.74 billion, which includes $1.1 billion in new spending on longterm needs such as construction projects, technology and equipment.“Our capital budget reflects our top priorities — public safety, affordability and the neighborhood infrastructure that is the backbone of our community,” Ginther said in a prepared statement released by his office.
In fact, over the last five years the city hasn't come close to spending a billion dollars on capital projects, with annual expenditures averaging about $454 million. The range has been from $393.8 million actually spent in 2021 to $487.2 million last year, according to information provided by the city Department of Finance.
$47.2 million in bond funds for subsidizing new affordable housing approved by voters in 2022, which will be added to $3.6 million in carryover.But the bulk of the capital budget is consumed by the city's public utilities, which will spend $763.7 million of all the new money in this year's plan, about 70%.
