New Gladiator 2 set photos have been released, teasing the massive scale of director Ridley Scott's upcoming sequel. Released in 2000, Gladiator stars Russell Crowe as Maximus, a Roman general-turned-slave who sets out to avenge his family's death at the hands of a ruthless emperor.

The images show the construction of what could be an entire city, which includes a large coliseum and some kind of temple, with building taking place on an island overlooking the Mediterranean Sea.
Building these types of sets suggests that, visually, Gladiator 2 could be quite the sight to behold. Although CGI has come a long way since the year 2000, there's still something about real sets that just makes a film come alive. With so much effort being put into epic sets, it's possible that the sequel's fight scenes will also rely more heavily on practical effects than CGI.
Gladiator 2's budget has not yet been revealed, but the cost of building such large sets is certainly no small sum. The willingness to spend this amount of cash suggests that the studios involved are confident in the project and Scott's vision. In combination with the impressive Gladiator 2 cast, the latest batch of set pictures suggest the sequel will be a truly epic affair.
