The 81st Golden Globe Awards on Jan. 7 will feature two new award categories — one for cinematic and box office achievement, and one for best performance in stand-up comedy on TV.
To qualify, a film must gross at least $150 million in box office receipts, at least $100 million of which has to come from U.S. domestic audiences. Alternatively, a film must get an equal amount of streams, as verified by “trusted industry sources,” Golden Globe officials said inNominated movies for the box office category will also be eligible for other category awards, such as the best drama or the best animated film.
The awards show also explained that, while box office and streaming numbers determine eligibility, the show’s voters will decide which of the highest-grossing movies actually get nominated based on excellence.
