“I know a car driver . He drove race cars, lives in Houston,” Burke said. “He told me he runs some cars on alcohol. That day was my last drink.” After turning professional, Elkington purchased a home close to Burke’s house in the Champions area in the 1980s and has been a member of the club since then.
Born John Joseph Burke Jr. on Jan. 29, 1923, in Fort Worth, Burke learned the game at age 9 from his father, Jack Burke Sr., a well-respected golf teacher. The younger Burke was raised in Fort Worth. He came to River Oaks with his father to work the caddie yard.
