Following the year’s hottest weather to kick off September and then a steamy second week, a cold front yesterday ushered in a real crispness to the air.ArrowRightThrough at least the weekend, temperatures should be cooler than normal with highs within a few degrees of 80 and lows mostly in the 50s. We’ll probably see some warmer-than-normal conditions return next week, but no more sustained 90-degree weather.
Matt Rogers, Capital Weather Gang’s long-range forecast specialist, indicated that the odds of a heat wave — or at least three straight days of 90-degree weather — are very low. Temperatures over the next 10 days are projected to run close to average, meaning highs close to 80 and lows close 60. Despite waving the checkered flag on summer, there will still be plenty of warm days ahead. The District’s final 80-degree day comes Oct. 17 on average. Although our final 90-degree day is often in the rearview mirror at this point, it has happened as late as Oct. 11, when it hit 90 in 1919. More recently, it reached 94 on Oct. 9, 2007.
