Google had similarly disabled Maps during the Russian invasion of Ukraine for the safety of local Ukrainian communities. Last year, Jeffrey Lewis, a professor at Middlebury Institute, noted the Russian invasion of Ukraine by using the traffic layer of Google Maps. According to his observation, the app was showing the traffic data by Android citizens who couldn’t get on the road because of the Russian military movement. Lewis and his team also used satellite imagery taken days before to compare the on-ground movement, reported Vice.
