Abbott has called for legislative action to create criminal penalties for parolees who’ve cut off their ankle monitors. In a letter to Patrick and Phelan, he wrote ankle monitor violaters’ apprehension and arrest should be prioritized.
On Dec. 19, 2022, Abbott requested a report from the BPP and Texas Department of Criminal Justice to investigate any lapses in the release and parole supervision of Hernandez and Jackson.
Abbott said that based on a report from BPP, it’s evident that a push for criminal consequences following ankle monitor violations needs to happen during the 88th Legislative Session. According to Abbott, TDCJ has made efforts to mend its administrative action and do a comprehensive review of supervision policies to avoid fatal repercussions from ankle monitor violations.
