New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo signed a bill Monday that permits the state to release President Donald Trump’s state tax returns.
Though the legislation is effective immediately, it’s unclear when ― or if ― any of the three congressional committees will request the documents. The Trump administration could also contest its legality in court. The law specifically requires the state commissioner to redact sensitive information prior to the release of the documents. That includes anything that might violate state or federal law, and private information like Social Security numbers, residential addresses and account numbers.
House Democrats in May issued subpoenas for Trump’s tax returns, consistent with a long-standing federal law that grants Congress access to private tax information.
