Citizens taking a legal share of deer help keep numbers under control and crop damage at a tolerable level.
Opening day of the 2022-23 Ohio deer archery season arrives Saturday without need for monetary justifications, but it got some anyway from Gov. Mike DeWine.
The governor could’ve said that farmers, a major constituency of his and of other Ohio politicians, by and large would prefer few crop-devouring deer on the landscape. Or, as some have acknowledged, no deer at all. Cutting out the politics, some activities justify themselves through the effort and time participants voluntarily expend on them. Hunters’ time can cross generations.
Notable nonetheless is that quite a few people are happy to participate in such public service, though the numbers of hunters aren’t what they used to be. The erosion of hunting participation, which began decades ago, showed a drop-off of 19% during the past decade.
