The online Fashion Icons auction opens next week with story-telling pieces
A dress worn by Princess Diana to a June 1985 birthday ball is coming to auction at Sotheby’s later this month alongside a red-and-white sweater dotted with white sheep—and a single black one—that she wore to a polo match before marrying Prince Charles in July 1981.
Houlton said she wanted to make sure each piece in the sale “had a really incredible story of both the person and when that item was worn.” The Fashion Icons sale also includes a headpiece with a taxidermied blue bird-of-paradise that Sarah Jessica Parker wore as Carrie Bradshaw in Sex and the City: a Movie to her wedding that never happened. Her character also wore it more recently to the Met Gala in And Just Like That, the HBO reboot of the series.
Another vintage item up for sale is a black-lace dress by American designer Norman Norell that Michelle Obama wore to the TNT Christmas musical broadcast on Dec. 12, 2010 in Washington, D.C. The 1960s dress has a fitted bodice and silk organza mid-length skirt over a silk crinoline petticoat with layers of tulle, according to Sotheby’s.
